1) Apple scab

Have any apple trees on your property? Then your trees are vulnerable to this disease, which emanates from a fungus called venturia inaequalis which is quite common in moist areas.

2) Oak root fungus

Also known as armillaria root rot, this fungus may be attacking your tree without you realizing it. That’s because the fungus forms inside the ground, where it targets the root systems of plants and trees.

3) Blight

Blight is used to classify an entire group of diseases, which are caused by either fungus or bacteria. There are several different varieties of blight that can impact trees in East Tennessee.

This includes:

• Bacterial blight, in which brown spots form on leaves. This is a highly dangerous disease for trees that are already stressed or injured.
• Fire blight is specific to any type of orchard tree and often hinders the amount of edible fruit produced. 
• Anthracnose can impact a wide array of different species of plants, including trees. Look for yellow or brown spots to form on your tree’s leaves. Left untreated, these spots darken and grow, potentially covering the entire leave before they spread.

4) Black spot

Small black circles form on the leaves of trees. As the disease progresses without being identified or treated, an infected tree may start shedding its leaves even in the middle of the peak growing season.

5) Collar rot

Scientifically known as phytophthora, this is another type of fungus that targets the upper roots or lower area of the trunk. This blocks the vascular system and hinders the overall health of the tree. A shrinking trunk is the major sign of infection.

Protect your trees against fungal threats

Remember that fungus thrives in dark, moist areas. As a general preventive method, you want to keep fallen leaves and other organic debris from accumulating around the trunk or root system of your trees. You also want to make sure the soil around your trees has good drainage. Make sure you are providing your trees with the necessary amounts of water and fertilizer.
