Trees add beauty and property value. But, it is essential to provide proper care for your trees, not only for safety reasons but also to keep them looking beautiful for the long haul. If you are planting a new tree in Kingsport or have well-established trees in need of care in the Tri-Cities, Promier Tree has six tips on how to grow healthy, strong trees.

  1. Plant the tree in the right location

Before purchasing a tree, do some research to determine the tree’s need for sunlight and space for growth. Then, figure out where to plant the tree so that its needs will be met. You may need to observe how the sunlight reaches your landscape to be sure the tree will be able to get the right amount of sun.

Also, consider the future growth of the tree. Will there be enough room for it to grow and expand while maintaining health and beauty and not compromise surrounding trees, plants, or structures? These are important points to consider before purchasing your tree. Once you have scoped out the ideal spot, head to your local garden center to purchase your tree and get started with planting.

  1. Water it properly

Newly planted trees require anywhere between 4 to 10 gallons of water each week during the first couple of growing seasons. Established trees can get by with as little as one inch of rainfall per week. Just be sure to keep a check on your newly planted tree if it hasn’t rained in a while.

  1. Add mulch around the tree

Before we go any further, be sure that you do not mound the mulch up around the trunk of the tree, which can starve it of the necessary sunlight and nutrients that it needs. Instead, remove any grass from around the tree, and then add about 2-4 inches of mulch around the tree. Mulch helps insulate the tree’s roots and retain moisture.

  1. Fertilize as necessary

Fertilizing lawns is quite common, although most people don’t think about fertilizing their trees. However, trees need nutrients, too, especially if you want them to grow strong and healthy. A slow release fertilizer is ideal for trees, but you will want to test your soil’s pH periodically to be sure that you use the right mix of nutrients for your trees.

  1. Prune to maintain the health and shape of your trees

Young trees are typically easy to prune yourself, especially if you can do so from standing on the ground. However, as your tree grows, don’t be tempted to do this yourself. Instead, hire a professional arborist in Kingsport that can safely handle the job for you. Our certified arborists are knowledgable in knowing which branches to prune, and how to do so safely without causing any damage to your property. Trees typically respond best when pruned during dormancy.

  1. Schedule checkups

Annual checkups are a great way to maintain the health and beauty of your trees. Our ISA Certified Arborists® in the Tri-Cities can assess your trees to ensure they are disease free, healthy, and strong. If, however, our arborist detects an issue, we can help treat your tree or recommend the best course of action.
